I am married to a wonderful woman, and we have three adopted boys from Colombia, five cats, and a house full of craziness and love. My kids are the hardest and best part of my day, every day, and seeing them grow and mature into young men makes me grateful to be alive. They are my heart and my soul, and I have no words for that kind of blessing. I have always appreciated the laughter and spontaneity of children, their sweetness, their complexity, and their straightforward way of just trying to get the most fun possible out of life. I really enjoy keeping kids smiling and happy. I was recently invited to the 10-year cancer free anniversary party of one of my patients. What joy to see him grow. That helps keep me going. I am also passionate about our bone marrow transplantation program, both for children with cancer and for children with non-oncologic disease. When I was in college, I had a chance to work in a rural Mexico clinic as a translator. I was inspired by the physicians – they worked so hard, with so little, and made a huge difference for people who had no other chance. Today I enjoy helping families who need Spanish to communicate with their physician. As a doctor who treats children with cancer and chronic blood diseases, I don’t just treat the disease itself. I try to help the children and families I care for understand the illness, and find ways to cope so they can make the most of every day. I enjoy helping kids and nurturing them – and forming close relationships with families as they navigate their way through serious illness. Improving a child’s quality of life is one of the most satisfying things we try to do each day, and seeing a child become a productive, happy adult is what we live for. As health care professionals, our mission is to do what’s best for our patients, and that priority comes first. I'm a pediatric hematologist and oncologist, and an assistant professor at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College. I primarily treat kids with non-malignant hematologic disorders and serve on various committees advocating for patients with hematologic diseases. I always wanted to work with kids and their families and to be able to provide good medical care to people of various backgrounds. I think working with kids and other pediatricians is one of the more enjoyable parts of life. I want to advocate on my patients and families’ behalf and to give them the best care possible. I'm most passionate about non-malignant hematologic disease. In particular I focus on immunohematology and care for patients with sickle cell disease, and I have a particular interest in reproductive health for patients with sickle cell disease, as well as metalogic disorders. I take care of dysfunctional uterine bleeding due to bleeding disorders such as Willebrand disease. I take care of patients with iron deficiency anemia with immune-mediated thrombocytopenias and other immune mediated cytopenia. Throughout my care, I make a point to be present with each patient and family when I'm with them, to make sure that they are heard and advocated for. Dr. Corinna L. Schultz is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist and an assistant professor at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. She's an invited lecturer, presenter, published medical journal author, active researcher, and member of multiple medical societies, serving on a national committee of the Children's Oncology Group. Even before medical school, I knew I wanted to work with children. Then I did my pediatric rotation and that sealed it! I love being around children and teens. They make everything better. It is amazing how a child who is dealing with an illness still finds a way to smile. I see the way kids don't let anything stop them, even cancer. It's inspiring. The reason I chose hematology and oncology is that they combine everything I love about medicine and find the most interesting. For me, it's the perfect blend of primary care, critical care, and specialty medicine. I love that it's multidisciplinary and that the field is progressing so quickly — with developments in new medications for sickle cell disease and hemophilia and new disease cures like gene therapy coming soon. It's an exciting time to be a hematology and oncology specialist. I'm passionate about taking care of kids, educating and communicating with children, families and medical professionals about hematology, and advancing health and health care through health services research to improve the way that we (within medicine, in general, and our hospital, in particular) deliver hematology and oncology care. My medical interests include: Sickle cell disease Sickle cell trait Other hemoglobin traits Bleeding disorders such as Hemophilia and von Willebrand disease Clotting disorders Iron deficiency anemia Patient portals Patient-physician communication I try to make a difference in every care setting I find myself in. I try to be exceptionally present for my patients and their families, and make sure they get their questions answered. I worked with the adult hematologists at Wilmington Hospital to create the first federally funded Hemophilia Treatment Center to care for children in Delaware with bleeding and clotting disorders. I also enjoy being active within the hospital, serving on specific groups and committees such as the Ethics Committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and Pediatric Clinical Competency Committee. I feel it's important to be active within the hospital and the field to ensure we're providing the highest quality and safest care possible. I also work to make a difference by doing research within my specialty and in healthcare delivery. Dr. Schultz is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). She is also highly rated in 9 other conditions, according to our data. Her clinical expertise encompasses Sickle Cell Disease, Congenital Hemolytic Anemia, Hemolytic Anemia, Hemoglobinopathy, and Splenectomy. I grew up in the New York City area. As a child, I was something of a science geek. I enjoyed applying what I learned to real life situations. As a pediatric cancer specialist, I always focus on helping kids with cancer and brain tumors enjoy the best possible quality of life. I have tremendous respect for the children in my care. Although most are very sick, they handle adversity amazingly well. They don’t complain and just want to be done with treatment so they can go on with their lives. I try to make a difference through hope and healing. The fact that Nemours is so active in cancer research means we have access to experimental treatment options that offer real hope for a cure. Just as important, we do everything we can to make a terrible process less terrible by alleviating any suffering. It is one of the greatest privileges to care for patients and help their families during their cancer treatment. I have always known that I wanted to work with children. Even when dealing with sickness, children have this uncanny ability to find the humor and positivity in all situations. I am passionate about taking the very best care of children and their families in every single interaction I have with them. I am passionate in continuing to improve the care and outcomes of children with cancer and blood disorders through clinical trials and research. I have a particular interest in treating children with leukemia and want to make improvements in every aspect of their care through clinical trials.I also have an interest in improving patient care and clinical research by finding innovative uses of the electronic health record to collect data about how patients are doing on treatment. I am a pediatric hematologist/oncologist at Nemours and a clinical assistant professor at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. When I’m not at work, I am most likely spending time with my husband and our two daughters. Children have a particular innocence and resilience that motivates me in the work I do. I love that in pediatrics there is a constant team effort to foster positivity and joy. I am in awe of the incredible strength of my amazing patients. I am passionate about providing exceptional care to my patients and bringing novel, effective therapies to the bedside. I specialize in taking care of children with leukemia as well as children who need a stem cell transplant or cellular therapy. I understand that I am meeting my patients and families on what seems like the worst day of their lives. I honor the difficult journey that they are about to undertake and the role I have in leading them on that journey. I make every effort to spend time with patients and families, making sure they have all the information they need regarding a diagnosis and treatment plan and that they know there is no question they can’t ask me. I also involve myself with research at Nemours in an effort to make sure that we are providing novel therapies to our current patients, as well as advancing the field for future patients. What is the definition of Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP)?

Immune thrombocytopenia is a disorder characterized by a blood abnormality called thrombocytopenia, which is a shortage of blood cells called platelets that are needed for normal blood clotting.

Which doctors treat Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP)?

Doctors who treat ITP are called hematologists. Hematologists are healthcare providers who diagnose, manage, and treat blood disorders and cancers that affect the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system. They can offer treatments to control symptoms and prevent problems from getting worse. In some cases, a primary care physician or pediatrician may help manage the condition, especially if symptoms are mild. Sometimes, if the immune system is involved, an immunologist – who focuses on immune system problems – might help, too.

    What causes ITP?

ITP happens when the body’s immune system attacks its own platelets. Platelets are cells that help our blood clot. This attack makes it harder for our blood to stop bleeding. The exact reason why the immune system does this is not always clear, but some things can trigger it, including infections like the flu, some vaccines, or medications might cause ITP. Autoimmune diseases, where the immune system attacks healthy cells, can also be a cause. For people living with ITP, stress or being sick can make symptoms worse.

What are the symptoms of ITP?

The symptoms of ITP can vary from person to person, but common signs include:

    • Bruising easily, even from small bumps
    • Small red or purple dots on the skin, called petechiae
    • Bleeding from the nose or gums more often than usual
    • Having heavy or long-lasting menstrual periods
    • Feeling very tired despite getting enough sleep

In more serious cases, people with ITP can have internal bleeding, which can be dangerous and may need immediate medical care.

    How is ITP treated?

ITP is a rare autoimmune disorder, and treatment depends on how serious the condition is. Some people with mild ITP may not need treatment, but doctors will watch them closely. For others, treatments focus on raising the number of platelets in the blood and stopping the immune system from attacking them. Doctors might prescribe steroids or immune globulin therapy to help the body make more platelets. In some cases, doctors may suggest removing the spleen, an organ that helps filter blood. If ITP isn’t treated, it can cause serious bleeding, which can be life-threatening in some cases.

What is the life expectancy for someone with ITP?

ITP is not life-threatening for most patients. Many people with ITP live a normal life expectancy, especially if they receive the right treatment and reach a stable platelet count. ITP usually doesn’t get worse with age. However, older adults may have more frequent flare-ups or complications like increased bleeding. With treatment and regular check-ups, most people with ITP can manage their symptoms and live long, healthy lives.

When should I see an Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) doctor near Kennett Square, PA?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) doctor near Kennett Square, PA?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) doctors near Kennett Square, PA?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) doctors near Kennett Square, PA?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) doctor near Kennett Square, PA?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.
